ELENA DURAN, flute
Elena Durán
is one of the leading flute
players in the world today. She was born to Mexican-American
parents in East Oakland, California and was self-taught until
the age of eighteen. After high school she studied at Mills
College and at the age of only twenty she was appointed Lecturer
in Flute at Stanford University. However, after two years she
she resigned her post at Stanford to resume her studies in
Europe with Jean Pierre Rampal, Alain Marion, Aurčle Nicolet and
James Galway. She spent two years as James Galway’s assistant,
teaching on his flute courses, editing his music, collaborating
with the writing of his books and helping to produce his
recordings. Elena then spent the following years based in
England, developing a concert career that has taken her all over
Europe, the Far East, Australasia, and the Americas.
Amongst Elena's many recordings, she has recorded Delius with
Eric Fenby, Bach with Vladimir Spivakov, Mozart with the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra, two albums with the legendary jazz-violinist
Stephane Grappelli and a chart-topping single and video with
Paul McCartney. Her most recent CD is "Nostalgia for Mexico" a
collection of Mexican salon music. Elena has also published
more than a dozen collections of music for flute.
Elena now lives in Mexico City and her most recent projects are
MEXICO DE MI CORAZON a progr am which she has played more than a
hundred times and FLAUTA SIN FRONTERAS, her own personal out-reach
program in which she takes music to those who cannot normally
attend concerts. She has made two tours along the US-Mexico
Border and has also made a tour of Mexico City’s jails.
