PAN Review of Mexican Folk Tunes: 14 Dances for Flute Duet by Elena Durán
This is a wonderful collection of tunes, which show the huge variety of styles to be found in Mexican folk music. I have been using these duets to play with students as a treat at the end of their lessons and they have all asked to play more of them. Elena Durán 's note at the end of each duet explains its origin and gives a sentence or two of advice on how to approach playing it. Her enthusiasm is infectious and the advice is always helpful. Some f the duets are easier than others. A few could be played by flute-players of about Grade 3 standard, but most would be suitable for someone of Grade 5-6 standard. One or two are a little more advanced. HOwever, this is the kind of music that can appeal to players of any level. A CD comes with this volume, with lovely performances by Elena Durán and Catherine Ramsden, as well as play-along tracks. Brenda Dykes - PAN Magazine - September 2006
